Ted Cruz: He Got By With a little Help From His Friends: Colleagues Helped Him Hold Floor of Senate - Washington Times - While Sen. Ted Cruz had to stay on his feet for his entire filibuster, he got a tremendous amount of help with the talking part, relying on colleagues for nearly 40 percent of the 21-hour-long affair. A Washington Times analysis of speaking times shows Sen. Mike Lee, a Utah Republican who stayed near Mr. Cruz’s side throughout the night, talked for 3 hours and 21 minutes of the filibuster, giving Mr. Cruz breathers to sip water, chat with his staff, check his iPhone for messages and do leg exercises. Mr. Cruz was able to yield to colleagues for questions without losing the floor. That offered a loophole that he and his allies made extensive use of, delivering speeches but ending with a question to stay within the rules. Sen. Marco Rubio helped out by consuming 96 minutes of floor time, including one 51-minute question at 6 a.m. Wednesday morning. Other senators who came to the floor and ate up time for Mr. Cruz were Sens. David Vitter, Jeff Sessions, Pat Roberts, Jim Risch, Rand Paul, James M. Inhofe and Mike Enzi. Read more........

(2) Cuccinelli, McAuliffe Stick to Talking Points, Attacks in First Statewide Debate - Washington Examiner - Virginia's gubernatorial candidates had their first debate in front of a statewide audience Wednesday night and spent most of it rehashing the familiar attacks they've spent millions of dollars broadcasting all summer long. The stakes were especially high for Republican Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, who entered the televised debate trailing Democrat Terry McAuliffe. He sought during the hour-long appearance to portray McAuliffe as a Democratic Party insider with no elective experience who throws around buzz words like "jobs" and "bipartisanship" without the knowledge of state government to back it up. "I'm the only candidate with a plan to create jobs other than to say the word 'jobs' repeatedly," Cuccinelli said.......When asked if Virginia schools should be allowed to open before Labor Day, a perennial issue for state politicians, McAuliffe said he would not grant schools exemptions, indicating it would hurt a tourism industry that relies on late-summer family vacations and young student employees. "The tourism business is too important," McAuliffe said. Cuccinelli quickly took the opposite position. "Children outrank tourism," he said. Read more......

(3) Gubernatorial Candidate Terry McAulife Wants Colorado Style Gun Control in Virginia - Townhall - Charles W. Cooke over at NRO has flagged this nice little nugget from Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe's campaign website: Support common sense gun control measures As Governor, Terry will support mainstream and majority supported gun control measures like universal background checks, limiting the size of magazines, and a return to the 1-gun-per-month rule. These measures respect Virginians’ right to bear arms while reducing gun violence. This gun control language was just recently added to McAuliffe's site, a bold move after Colorado's historic recall elections. But why now? The answer can be found in the money trail, which leads to New York City. Bloomberg has repeatedly complained about the "flow" of firearms from Virginia to New York City. Democratic Virginia gubernatorial hopeful Terry McAuliffe recently met with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg in an effort to get support from the billionaire politician, two sources familiar with the meeting told POLITICO. The pair met in New York a week-and-a-half ago, according to the sources. Aides to McAuliffe declined comment, and a Bloomberg spokesman did not respond to an email asking about the meeting.
