Gun Deaths Down 49% Since 1993 - Pew - American Thinker - One would think this good news about gun homicides would be spread far and wide and that the American people would realize that the increase in gun ownership over the last decades hasn't resulted in an increase in firearm deaths. But that's not the case. Fifty-six percent of Americans believe the death rate from guns is higher today than it was 20 years ago. And only 12% think it is lower. Pew analyzed crime statistics and came to some startling conclusions: Compared with 1993, the peak of U.S. gun homicides, the firearm homicide rate was 49% lower in 2010, and there were fewer deaths, even though the nation's population grew. The victimization rate for other violent crimes with a firearm--assaults, robberies and sex crimes--was 75% lower in 2011 than in 1993. Violent non-fatal crime victimization overall (with or without a firearm) also is down markedly (72%) over two decades.  Read more.........

(2) Seals' Families Hit 2011 Afghan Mission in Which Sons Were Killed, Deem Probe a Cover-up, Washington Times - The families of Navy SEALs killed in an August 2011 downing of a helicopter in Afghanistan came forward Thursday to blast the U.S. command and the Obama administration for the mission and to call for an official investigation into what they deem a whitewash. They also rebuked the White House for its extensive leaking of details of the Osama bin Laden raid in May 2011. Identifying the raiders as the secretive SEAL Team 6 put a target on the heads of the members of the doomed mission in Afghanistan, the parents said. They also said the CH-47 Chinook helicopter used in the mission had no gunship escort and no cover when it was attempting to land at 2 a.m. that Aug. 6. Taliban on a rooftop shot down the helicopter with a rocket-propelled grenade. All 38 onboard died in the fiery crash. The casualties included 17 SEALs, making it one of the elite unit’s worst losses in combat. The hastily planned mission was intended to aid 47 Army Rangers in the Tangi Valley, even though the Rangers controlled the battle zone.  Read more.......

(3) Senate Committee With GOP Help, Kills Amendment that Would Require Border Enforcement Before Legalizing Illegals, Hot Air - No, the GOP help didn’t come from Rubio. This was a Judiciary Committee vote and he’s not a member. Lindsey Graham and Jeff Flake are, though, and they each voted with Democrats to torpedo Grassley’s amendment demanding that probationary legal status not be granted until the border has been effectively secured for six months. Remember, the Gang of Eight bill doesn’t flatly require border security at any point. Illegals get probationary legal status quickly, after DHS submits an initial security plan. Then, if, after five years, the border hasn’t been substantially secured, a “Border Commission” will huddle and issue further security recommendations. Five years after that, if the border’s still not secure, the citizenship process begins regardless of what the state of the border is. Today was the day the Judiciary Committee could have added real teeth to the bill’s enforcement provisions and, of course, they refused. Read more.........

(4) Report: Women, Marriage, Face Obamacare Train Wreck - Washington Examiner - Women, especially those with low incomes or planning to marry, face a financial "train wreck" from Obamacare when it kicks in Jan. 1, according to a new pre-Mother's Day report from Senate Republicans. In advance of the president's plan on Friday to highlight the benefits of the program for women, the GOP report provided to Secrets said, "his health care law hurts women, and ... it's a terrible Mother's Day gift." The report from Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso, an orthopedic surgeon who heads the Senate Republican Policy Committee, details six areas where the law could become a financial burden or worse to women. 1. Marriage could raise taxes on women under Obamacare, which some believe encourages women to stay single. Barrasso said the law increases the Medicare hospital insurance tax from 2.9 percent to 3.8 percent on wages higher than $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for couples. Thus, even for wealthy women, it's easier to avoid the tax by staying single instead of marrying and combining incomes. Read more.......
