Because of John Roberts........  I crossed paths with Chief Justice John Roberts over the weekend, and it got me to thinking. If it wasn’t for him, the stakes in this presidential election would be an awful lot lower. If Roberts had not decided to shock the world, Obamacare would be dead as a doornail. When you consider that the four dissenting justices – Scalia, Alito, Thomas and Kennedy – went beyond what most observers had expected by declaring not just the individual mandate, but the entire law unconstitutional, the federal government’s seizure of 15% of the nation’s economy would have ended had Roberts seen fit to simply do the same thing as his fellow strict constructionist travelers – and even one not considered a strict constructionist – on the highest court of the land.......But Obamacare, the tipping point between a constitutional republic and a social democracy, would become a fixture. By the time the next presidential election rolls around in 2016, this 2300 page monstrosity – complete with its crushing regulatory and tax burdens, mandates and unsustainable costs – would have been the law of the land for a full six years. And history has demonstrated that entrenched entitlement programs are never abolished, with the lone exception of the widely and wildly reviled federal welfare program known as AFDC (Aid to Families with Dependent Children – reformed/overturned in 1996 to include stringent work requirements, which Obama, true to his leftist ideology, has attempted to weaken by presidential fiat that clearly exceeds his constitutional authority).  Read more.......

Catholic Ethicists: Immoral for Catholic Business Owners to Obey Obamacare - CNS News - The National Catholic Bioethics Center has published an analysis saying that it will be immoral for a Catholic who owns a private business to purchase health insurance for his or her workers under Obamacare and its implementing regulations--which mandate that insurance plans bought by businesses and individuals must cover sterilizations and all Food and Drug Administration-approved contraceptives, including those that can cause abortions. Dropping all coverage appears to be the most morally sound approach,” the Catholic ethicists concluded. They further said that Catholics have an affirmative duty to oppose the Obamacare mandate.  Read more........

Surprise: Healthcare and Insurance Costs Still on the Up and Up - Hot Air - Part of then-candidate Obama’s argumentation for a plan for instituting universal health care was that such a plan would help to lower the costs and premiums for both individuals and businesses — and he estimated that we’d be able to see these widespread benefits by the end of his first term in office. But ABC is reporting on two new independent studies suggesting that both health insurance premiums and health care spending are rising at an accelerated pace during Obama’s tenure. Oh joy, oh rapture: Spending on health care rose 4.6 percent in 2011 — up $4,500 per person, on average — according to the nonpartisan Health Care Cost Institute. That’s up from a 3.8 growth rate in 2010. Health insurance premiums for individuals and families also climbed year-over-year, up 3 percent ($186) on average for an individual and 4 percent ($672) on average for a family, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.  Read more......

Hey, Something New and Different: CBO Raises Another Estimate of Obamacare Costs - Hot Air Six million Americans will pay the health care tax rather than obtain coverage under President Obama’s health care law, according to a new Congressional Budget Office estimate Wednesday — a 50 percent increase over CBO’s estimate of just two years ago. CBO also said there will be 30 million people without insurance, though all but the 6 million will be exempt from the tax. The exempt Americans are a combination of illegal immigrants and those with incomes too low to pay income taxes. The agency said the government will collect about $7 billion from the tax in 2016, and $8 billion a year thereafter. One of the reasons the CBO cited for upping their estimate on the number of people who will pay the penalty is the enduring overall crumminess of our economy, meaning that they now expect that more people than originally anticipated will be unemployed, which in turn will make it harder to for people to buy insurance coverage. Man, all of the Obama administration’s many and various attempts at social engineering just don’t seem to be working out for them, do they?  Read more......
