National September 11 Memorial and Museum - #3184 - Lawsuit by Atheists Over 9-11 Lawsuit Fails to Win Much Support - Prayer Team

One group of atheists in America is bearing the cross alone in their attempt to eliminate the Christian symbol from the National September 11 Memorial and Museum. According to the Washington Post, only a few panelists have defended a lawsuit filed to stop the inclusion of a metal cross at the memorial and museum at One Liberty Plaza in New York City. In fact, an unlikely coalition of conservatives, atheists, journalists and even one television talk show host have all condemned the legal challenge brought by American Atheists. The suit sought to have the cross completely removed or to have “equal representation for all religions” added to the memorial display. The group’s president, Dave Silverman, went so far as to suggest atheists add the symbol of an atom, “because we’re all made of atoms.” In its court action, the atheist group argued that because the cross is a religious symbol of Christianity and the museum is partly government-financed and located on government property, the cross’s inclusion in the museum violates the United States Constitution and state civil rights law. The 17-foot cross was found by a construction worker at Ground Zero in New York City after the September 11, 2001 attacks. For the past five years, it has been displayed outside a Catholic church close to the former site of the World Trade Center Twin Towers. Read more........
