What made King and Spalding beat a cowardly retreat from their client, the House of Representatives, and abandon their defense of DOMA? According to TPMDC, the Left may not have scored a scalp after all, at least not directly. Brian Beutler reports that the law firm’s corporate clients objected to the decision to represent the defense, including the Atlanta firm’s most high-profile customer, Coca-Cola: As public relations debacles go, this was a doozy. But the firm must have calculated that the alternative would have been worse. In the intervening week, a series of public and behind-the-scenes developments made it clear that the firm would suffer recriminations for defending what many of its top clients and future recruits — not to mention gay rights advocates — consider to be an anti-gay law. Sources with knowledge of the backlash confirm that one of King and Spalding’s top clients, Coca Cola, also based in Atlanta, directly intervened to press the firm to extricate itself from the case. A Coca Cola spokesman declined to comment on or off the record for this story, but pointed TPM to the company’s long public history of support for equality and diversity.  Read more.........  AW: I have contacted Coca-Cola by email and by telephone for further clarification with the regard to the information contained in this article, and notified them unless this story is in error, my family will no longer be using Coca-Cola products.  Their reply, someone will get back to me.  If you wish to contact them, the telephone number is 800-438-2653,  link to email form to contact them....

King and Spalding Decides that Marriage and Democracy are Indefensible, but Terrorists and Murderers are Fine - Redstate - Who deserves legal representation - the American people, or their sworn enemies? To the Atlanta, Georgia law firm of King and  Spalding, the answer most emphatically is only the latter.  That is the message sent by that firm as we get news that the head of King and Spalding’s appellate practice group, former Solicitor General Paul Clement, has resigned from the firm after King and Spalding backed out of Clement’s representation of the United States House of Representatives in defending the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).  DOMA, as you will recall, provides that states do not, under the Full Faith and Credit Clause of the U.S. Constitution, need to recognize same-sex marriages in other states. That doesn’t prevent you from getting a same-sex marriage if your state permits it; it just means that, like your gun permit, it won’t be respected across state lines. It also, in Section 3, limits the federal definition of marriage to opposite-sex marriages:  Read more regarding the history of Defense of Marriage Act and why this is so important to defend...........

Judge's Homosexual Relationship at Issue in California Marriage Case - CNS News - Rumors swirled that the federal judge who had struck down California's same-sex marriage ban last summer was gay, but the lawyers charged with defending the measure remained silent on the subject. Their preferred strategy for getting the ruling overturned on appeal was to focus on the law, not a judge's personal life, they said.  Eight months later, Proposition 8's proponents and their attorneys have taken a new position. They filed a motion Monday seeking to vacate Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker's historic ruling, a move they said was prompted by the now-retired jurist's recent disclosure that he is in a long-term relationship with another man.  Read more........

Revolting: Prolife Memorial Vandalized With Upside Down Crosses, Fake Blood - The Blaze - The Cemetery of the Innocents at Clarion University in Clarion, PA is supposed to commemorate the millions of babies lost to abortion. But last week, the quaint memorial with       350 wooden crosses resembled a satanic ritual scene after it was vandalized during the campus’s Life Week, which also happened to be Holy Week. Students for Life of America (SLA) explains the vandalism: In a breathtaking public display of anti-Christian and anti-Life motivations, 350 crosses were pulled up and re-inserted in inverted fashion, a well-known anti-Christian symbol. Additionally, red paint was splattered on crosses and signs. Even eerier was the mock bloody footprints of an infant painted in front of the display. Read more..........

Supreme Court Urged to Decide Case Involving Roadside Crosses in Utah - CNS News - If a recent appeals court decision is not overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court, the Christian cross could soon become an unconstitutional symbol -- even in places like Arlington Cemetery, a conservative advocacy group warns. The case, Davenport v. American Atheists, Inc., “may very well be the most important religious liberty case in decades,” the Family Research Council said. The case dates to 2005, when an atheist group sued the Utah Highway Patrol and the Utah Transportation Department, arguing that roadside memorial crosses honoring fallen state troopers constitute a state establishment of religion. The memorials are fully funded and maintained by a private organization, the Utah Highway Patrol Association. Read more.......
