Gabrielle Giffords - #2553 - Charles Krauthammer: Massacre, Followed by Libel - National Review (2) Arpaio: Dupnik Should 'Shut Mouth' on Political Agenda in Tragedy - Newsmax (3) VIDEO: Rep. Allen West: Now is Not the Time to Grandstand - The Right Scoop (4) The Lone Gunman Theory of Legislation - Reason Magazine

The charge: The Tucson massacre is a consequence of the "climate of hate" created by Sarah Palin, the Tea Party, Glenn Beck, Obamacare opponents and sundry other liberal betes noires. The verdict: Rarely in American political discourse has there been a charge so reckless, so scurrilous and so unsupported by evidence. As killers go, Jared Loughner is not reticent. Yet among all his writings, postings, videos and other ravings - and in all the testimony from all the people who knew him - there is not a single reference to any of these supposed accessories to murder. Not only is there no evidence that Loughner was impelled to violence by any of those upon whom Paul Krugman, Keith Olbermann, the New York Times, the Tucson sheriff and other rabid partisans are fixated. There is no evidence that he was responding to anything, political or otherwise, outside of his own head.  Read more.........  Article contributed by Steve Peters.

Audio:  Telephone call with Sheriff Arpaio of Arizona -  Arpaio: Dupnik Should 'Shut Mouth' on Political Agenda Tragedy - Newsmax  Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio tells Newsmax that, if his fellow Arizona Sheriff Clarence Dupnik were an appointed chief of police instead of an elected official, he would be “fired tomorrow” for comments he’s made about the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and others on Saturday.  Arpaio also complains that people are using the tragedy “for their own political agenda,” and says officials such as Dupnik should “shut our mouth” about the case.  Arpaio, whose county includes most of the Phoenix metropolitan area, has been called “America’s toughest sheriff.” He has limited county inmates to two meals a day, banned “sexually explicit material” in prison, reinstituted chain gangs, and set up a “tent city” as an extension of the Maricopa County Jail.  Read more and listen to audio of telephone interview.  Article contributed by Steve Peters.

Rep. Allen West - Now is not the Time to Grandstand - The Right Scoop - Rep. Allen West says that he’s not afraid for himself, but rather he wants his constituents to feel safe when he holds town halls or gatherings to meet with them. He does however find the political opportunism that has come from this weekend’s tragedy in Arizona deplorable and unconscionable. He says now is not the time to grandstand.  Article contributed by Steve Peters.

The Lone Gunman Theory of Legislation - Reason Magazine - Jared Lee Loughner, the man accused of shooting 20 people outside a Tucson grocery store on Saturday, probably will never get a chance to create the "new money system" he discusses in one of his rambling YouTube videos. But he can still have an important effect on public policy—if we let him.  After the shocking attack—which killed six people, including U.S. District Judge John Roll and 9-year-old Christina Green, and wounded 14, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.)—there was no shortage of knee-jerk proposals for preventing future outbursts of senseless violence. Most of them would sacrifice Americans' freedom in a vain attempt to protect us from armed lunatics.  Read more.......  Article contributed by Steve Peters.
