Abortion - #2563 - Staggering: U.S. Passed 53 Million Abortion Mark in 2010 - Baptist Press (2) 35 States Take Steps to Keep Abortion Out of Health Care Plans - Citizen Link (3) Nebraska's New Fetal Pain Law - Citizen Link

EDITOR'S NOTE: The following story is being posted in conjunction with Sanctity of Human Life Sunday (Jan. 16) in the Southern Baptist Convention.  At some point in 2010 -- 37 years removed from the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision -- a doctor in the United States performed the nation's 53 millionth legal abortion, a sobering stat that ethicists say should drive the public to speak up for the unborn. The statistic is based on data compiled by the Guttmacher Institute, a pro-choice organization whose studies are acknowledged by most major pro-choice organizations. The nation's abortion rate reached a peak of 1.6 million in 1990 and has steadily fallen in most years ever since, although Guttmacher's latest data, from 2008, showed the abortion rate had risen slightly to 1,212,000 million from 1,206,000 in 2005, the most recent data point. Because Guttmacher no longer releases abortion data every year, the 53 million figure is based on assumptions that the abortion rate remained relatively unchanged in 2009 and 2010.  Read more.........

35 States Take Steps to Keep Abortion Out of Health Care Plans - Citizen Link - Five states have passed laws to prevent plans in the new “health insurance exchanges” from covering abortions. And more than 30 states have introduced an opt-out bill, are planning to introduce a bill shortly or are laying the groundwork to introduce a bill.  The health care reform law requires states to operate and maintain the exchanges. Health insurance plans offering abortion coverage are allowed to participate in a state’s exchange and to receive federal subsidies unless the state Legislature opts out of offering the plans.  “I predict that we will see changes in President Obama’s pro-abortion health care plan and in other pro-life measures as a result of pro-life leadership taking their places in Washington,” said Charmaine Yoest, president and CEO of Americans United for Life (AUL).  Read more.........

Nebraska's New Fetal Pain Law - Citizen Link - Nebraska broke new ground on the pro-life front when its fetal-pain law went into effect in October. The law protects babies after 20 weeks unless the mom’s life is in danger. And it has been successful in forcing notorious late-term abortionist Leroy Carhart to leave the state. Lawmakers in Kansas, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri and Kentucky are drafting bills similar to Nebraska’s to keep Carhart from moving in. Most states ban abortions after 24 weeks, with narrow exceptions. At the center of the debate is the issue of when a preborn baby begins to feel pain........Dr. Paul Ranalli, a neurologist at the University of Toronto, disagrees. “At 20 weeks, the fetal brain has the full complement of brain cells present in adulthood,” he says, “ready and waiting to receive pain signals from the body, and their electrical activity can be recorded.”  Read more........
