Fifth District Debate in Lynchburg Centers on Economic Issues - New Era Progress - Rep. Tom Perriello and Republican Robert Hurt focused on business issues in their fourth major debate Wednesday, clashing on which of them has better ideas for improving the economy of the 5th District.  The two-candidate forum at Randolph College was sponsored by the chambers of commerce in the Lynchburg and Danville areas, and attended by about 200 people. The crowd cheered loudest for Hurt.  Perriello, a Democrat seeking his second term, said the nation faces a problem of “how are we going to out-compete the world?” Chambers of commerce and small businesses may hold the answer, he said, because they “are the heart and soul of American capitalism” and job creation “must come from the private sector.”  Hurt, a state senator from Chatham, began by thanking the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for endorsing him, and then accused Perriello of not keeping promises.  Read more.........
