United States of America - #4498 - Is America Exceptional? -Norman Podhoretz, Hillsdale College
Is America Exceptional? Norman Podhoretz - Hillsdale College - The following is adapted from a speech delivered on September 20, 2012, in Washington, D.C., at Hillsdale College’s third annual Constitution Day Dinner.
ONCE UPON A TIME, hardly anyone dissented from the idea that, for better or worse, the United States of America was different from all other nations. This is not surprising, since the attributes that made it different were vividly evident from the day of its birth. Let me say a few words about three of them in particular.
First of all, unlike all other nations past or present, this one accepted as a self-evident truth that all men are created equal. What this meant was that its Founders aimed to create a society in which, for the first time in the history of the world, the individual’s fate would be determined not by who his father was, but by his own freely chosen pursuit of his own ambitions. In other words, America was to be something new under the sun: a society in which hereditary status and class distinctions would be erased, leaving individuals free to act and to be judged on their merits alone. There remained, of course, the two atavistic contradictions of slavery and the position of women; but so intolerable did these contradictions ultimately prove that they had to be resolved—even if, as in the case of the former, it took the bloodiest war the nation has ever fought. Tea Party - IRS Rallies - #4497 - Why Were Department of Homeland Security Agents Seemingly Monitoring Multiple Tea Party IRS Protests Across the Country on Tuesday? The Blaze (2) Ken Cuccinelli Rips President Obama's Energy Agenda - Washington Examiner
Why Were DHS Agents Seemingly Monitoring Multiple Tea Party IRS Protests Across the Country on Tuesday? The Blaze - There were multiple reported sightings of agents with the Department of Homeland Security at several Tea Party-led IRS protests in states like Missouri, Florida, Illinois and Indiana. The rallies that occurred across the country on Tuesday were sparked by the IRS’ unfair targeting of conservative groups — one of the several scandals the Obama administration is dealing with.
What is unclear though is why federal officials felt the Tea Party presence required more than the attention of local law enforcement.
These photos, one showing “armed” DHS guards, were reportedly taken at the St. Louis IRS protest:
In Maitland, Fla., just north of Orlando, a Tea Party-led IRS protest also reportedly attracted the Department of Homeland Security. Photos apparently snapped at that particular protest show at least one DHS vehicle at the site of the rally.
In one of the photos, a women poses in front of the DHS SUV with a sign that reads: “Hey IRS! Don’t target me, bro!” Read more........
Ken Cuccinelli Rips President Obama's Energy Agenda - Washington Examiner - Attorney General and Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli promised Thursday that battling President Obama over environmental policies would be a cornerstone of his energy agenda. Speaking at a power line manufacturer in the Virginia-Tennessee border town of Bristol, Cuccinelli ripped into Obama and the Environmental Protection Agency for approving new regulations and taxes that he said are burdensome to businesses. "Protect the environment, we always want to do that and keep that in mind, but it's always about a balance" with job creation, Cuccinelli said. The Republican nominee also doubled down on promises to boost the state's shrinking coal industry, calling it "essential." He criticized his opponent, Democrat Terry McAuliffe, as an adversary to coal, which remains a critical piece of the economy in southwest Virginia. Read more.......

IRS Scandal - #4496 - Higher-Ups Knew of IRS Scandal - Wall Street Journal (2) Ex-Diplomats Report New Benghazi Whistleblowers with Information Devastating to Clinton and Obama - PJ Media (3) Jefferson Area Tea Party Protests IRS Actions - NBC29 News
Higher-Ups Knew of IRS Case - Wall Street Journal - The Internal Revenue Service's watchdog told top Treasury officials around June 2012 he was investigating allegations the tax agency had targeted conservative groups, for the first time indicating that Obama administration officials were aware of the explosive matter in the midst of the president's re-election campaign. The disclosure to the Treasury general counsel and the deputy secretary was a cursory one, according to J. Russell George, the Treasury inspector general for tax administration. He said he didn't reveal conclusions of the probe, which was in its early stages, and his disclosure came as part of a routine update to Treasury leaders. At the time, Republican lawmakers were complaining publicly about alleged IRS targeting of tea-party groups.
The revelation nonetheless raised a fresh set of questions about who was aware of the problem within the Obama administration. It was one of several new details that emerged during a contentious four-hour House committee hearing Friday, held one week after an IRS official revealed at a legal conference that the agency had taken "absolutely inappropriate" actions in targeting conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status for often heavy-handed scrutiny. (2) Ex-Diplomats Report New Benghazi Whistle-blowers with Information Devastating to Clinton and Obama - PJ Media - The former diplomat who spoke with PJ Media regarded the whole enterprise as totally amateurish and likened it to the Mike Nichols film Charlie Wilson’s War about a clueless congressman who supplies Stingers to the Afghan guerrillas. “It’s as if Hillary and the others just watched that movie and said ‘Hey, let’s do that!’” the diplomat said. He added that he and his colleagues think the leaking of General David Petraeus’ affair with his biographer Paula Broadwell was timed to silence the former CIA chief on these matters. Regarding General Ham, military contacts of the diplomats tell them that AFRICOM had Special Ops “assets in place that could have come to the aid of the Benghazi consulate immediately (not in six hours).” Ham was told by the White House not to send the aid to the trapped men, but Ham decided to disobey and did so anyway, whereupon the White House “called his deputy and had the deputy threaten to relieve Ham of his command.” The White House motivation in all this is as yet unclear, but it is known that Ham retired quietly in April 2013 as head of AFRICOM. PJ Media recognizes this is largely hearsay, but the two diplomats sounded quite credible. One of them was in a position of responsibility in a dangerous area of Iraq in 2004. We will report more as we learn it. Read more........
(3) Jefferson Area Tea Party Protests IRS Actions - NBC29 News - The Jefferson Area Tea Party took part in a national wave of protests Tuesday against the IRS's targeting of conservative groups. Tea party members and others gathered for a "Rein in the IRS" rally at the Free Speech Wall on the downtown mall in Charlottesville. A smaller group went to the Charlottesville IRS office to deliver a notice of its concerns beforehand. The area Tea Party's chairwoman, Carole Thorpe, says they want to make sure these actions don't happen to another organization. "This isn't good for any American. It just happens to happening to us right now, but this is a broader concern of what we talk about at the Tea Party all the time. We talk about federal overreach, we talk about abuse of power, and this is definitely a class A example of it," Thorpe said. The Jefferson Area Tea Party says it wasn't targeted by the IRS. (2) Jeferson Area Tea Party - Rein in the IRS Rally - Tuesday, May 21, 12:30 p.m., Free Speech Monument, Downtown Mall. Tea Party Patriots, a national organization of tea party activists, has called for "Rein in the IRS" rallies to be held at 12:00 noon tomorrow at Internal Revenue Service offices across the United States. These rallies are intended to protest the recent scandal of the Internal Revenue Service singling out tea party and other conservative groups for undue scrutiny when applying for tax-exempt status. JATP Executive Board members will deliver a statement in front of the Charlottesville IRS office at 12:00 noon. The business block in that area is tight -- too tight to hold a rally of any significant size without blocking pedestrian or street traffic and risking disbursement by the police. So, we are asking our members and others NOT TO COME to the IRS building -- only the members of the executive board should attend. You may hear about this in the media, so we're letting you know to avoid confusion. We will read a statement (hopefully with at least one media person present), then walk into the IRS office to present the highest ranking official we can find with a printed copy of our statement. ** At 12:30 p.m., JATP members and other concerned citizens are invited to gather for an impromptu rally at the First Amendment Monument/Free Speech Wall on the Downtown Mall (near the NTELOS Wireless Pavilion and City Hall). Leadership will briefly discuss its statement and experience at the IRS, then citizens present will be welcome to share their thoughts about the overreach and abuse of government. Respectful signs will be welcome.

Is the White House Visitors Log the trail to the smoking gun? The stunning questions are raised by the following set of new facts. March 31, 2010. According to the White House Visitors Log, provided here in searchable form by U.S. News and World Report, the president of the anti-Tea Party National Treasury Employees Union, Colleen Kelley, visited the White House at 12:30pm that Wednesday noon time of March 31st. The White House lists the IRS union leader’s visit this way: Kelley, Colleen Potus 03/31/2010 12:30 In White House language, “POTUS” stands for “President of the United States.” The very next day after her White House meeting with the President, according to the Treasury Department’s Inspector General’s Report, IRS employees — the same employees who belong to the NTEU — set to work in earnest targeting the Tea Party and conservative groups around America. (4) Rob Schilling: Spiritual Warfare: Democrat Hellhounds descent on EW Jackson - Bearing Drift - For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. —Ephesians 6:12. EW Jackson, the Virginia GOP’s 2013 nominee for Lieutenant Governor, is under siege from the demonic hellhounds of the left. An unabashed Christian and a fiery orator, Jackson took the GOP Convention by storm, Saturday, with a speech so powerful that it instantly converted hundreds, if not thousands of undecided and pre-decided convention attendees. Defying all odds and embarrassing most pundits, EW Jackson won—handily, decisively, and in spite of opponents’ desperate and dirty campaign trickery. Immediately upon victory, though, Jackson became the target of vicious Progressive disdain. Democrat Senator Ralph Northam, himself a 2013 candidate for Lieutenant Governor, characterized the pro-life Jackson as having an “extreme social agenda” and damned him for being a threat to “women’s health.” Yet, Northam—an MD who practices pediatric neurology at Norfolk’s Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters—is a reliable vote for the pro-death, Planned Parenthood lobby and repeatedly uses the Orwellian “women’s reproductive rights” as a euphemism for infanticide. (5) Shaun Kennedy - The Richmond Screwjob: How Corey Stewart (Almost) Sold His Endorsement for $85,000 - Bearing Drift - I can’t keep this one quiet anymore. There’s a lot of chatter about the supposed false endorsements of Snyder by PWC Chairman Corey Stewart and AG nominee Mark Obenshain. Truth is, Corey Stewart really did endorse Pete Snyder — that is confirmed by multiple sources in and around the campaign (including former Stewart staffers). Folks have to ask themselves why a Snyder campaign that had been flawless up to that point would have made such a critical error. The answer is twofold: (1) Stewart falsely announced the endorsement of Martha Boneta, hero of the Boneta Bill after Delegate Scott Lingamfelter announced his endorsement of Snyder. It was simply not true… and Martha was on the floor of the convention wearing a Pete ’13 shirt and having a great time. Sore feelings, it would seem… (2) After Stewart had given Snyder’s team the endorsement, a funny thing happened. Patrick Lee (check your cell phones) marched up to the Snyder press box and made an additional demand… of $85,000 cash to cover Corey Stewart’s campaign expenses. Snyder staffers were baffled. Hadn’t Corey Stewart already given his word? Patrick Lee repeated the demand, saying that Stewart staff had not been paid up and so forth. Snyder staffers did the right thing — they said the endorsement was already given and they expected Stewart to keep their word. What happened next could only be described as the “Richmond Screwjob” as Patrick Lee ran from the Snyder box shouting “No deal! Stewart did *not* endorse Snyder!!” …guess who was watching from the stage? Corey Stewart… who then began a vigorous argument with RPV chairman Pat Mullins demanding to be able to take the stage. Midway through that argument, Stewart eyeballed Jackson who was congratulating his delegates. The fist went into the air. Jackson was endorsed by Stewart instead. Read more......

Joe Thomas: Conventional Wisdom - Bearing Drift - Overheard on the floor of the Richmond Coliseum as Saturday morning’s RPV convention slowly became Saturday night’s RPV Convention; “This is why I said we shouldn’t do this.” Oh, this was EXACTLY why we should do this. Allow me to explain. What we experienced Saturday was exactly what Ken Cuccinelli wanted, an arena full of grass roots activists angry over the way their taxes are about to go up in exchange for a transportation legacy. (Funny moment; RPV Chair Pat Mullins, filling time after the fourth vote, said “We are about to introduce the team that will bring the Commonwealth back to Republican leadership!” Ooops.) But a funny thing about getting what you want, sometimes it actually doesn’t work out the way you wanted it. Now, I’m sure that there was a ‘dream team’ in mind (There always is when working with consultants, more about them shortly.) When the convention was gaveled to order at 10:20 after the Coliseum decided to only open three entrances, all side-by side, instead of the promised twelve, (BTW, I wonder how much Planned Parenthood ‘appreciated’ all of us being funneled past their encampment.) but after E.W. Jackson received 37% of that first ballot it became clear that the best laid plans of these mice and men were about to go astray. Read more.........

(2) Jackson: The Party Builder Who Helps the Ticket Win - Bearing Drift - Many people talk about growing the party, yesterday E.W. Jackson did it. The foundation for the eventual Jackon landslide were the incredible number of people who came to Richmond to support Jackson on the first ballot. It was clear to many that the convention was filled with Jackson supporters from the applause lines when the candidate names were stated by the Nominations Chair and Convention Chair. It was equally clear as people watched the convention from the very start. At the start of the convention, it was clear that more delegates were holding Jackson signs, than signs for any other LG nominee. What is also interesting is that while conservatives absolutely love Cuccinelli, it was Jackson who brought the energy to the convention. No candidate brought the energy or electricity to the coliseum like Jackson. Read more.........
(3) VIDEO: Unconstitutional: AP CEO Blasts Abusive: Justice Department in First TV Interview Since Scandal Broke - The Blaze - The president and chief executive officer of The Associated Press on Sunday called the government’s secret seizure of two months of reporters’ phone records “unconstitutional” and said the news cooperative has not ruled out legal action against the Justice Department. Gary Pruitt, in his first television interviews since it was revealed the Justice Department subpoenaed phone records of AP reporters and editors, said the move already has had a chilling effect on journalism. Pruitt said the seizure has made sources less willing to talk to AP journalists and, in the long term, could limit Americans’ information from all news outlets. Pruitt told CBS’ “Face the Nation” that the government has no business monitoring the AP’s newsgathering activities. “And if they restrict that apparatus … the people of the United States will only know what the government wants them to know and that’s not what the framers of the Constitution had in mind when they wrote the First Amendment,” he said. In a separate interview with the AP, Pruitt said the news cooperative had not decided its next move but has not ruled out legal action against the government. He said the Justice Department’s investigation is out of control and that President Barack Obama should rein it in, apparently believing that the White House had no knowledge of the decision to seize the records. (4) Virginia Governor's Race a Harbinger of 2014 - American Thinker - Perhaps no other statewide race will be watched with more interest this year than the Virginia governor's race. And the Republicans just upped the ante by nominating three strong conservatives for statewide office. Politico: Rejuvenated by a Democratic scandal in Washington and a tea party conservative atop their ticket, Virginia Republicans Saturday nominated a trio of statewide candidates whose fate will be closely watched as an indicator of the health of the national GOP. Crusading state Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, facing no intra-party opposition, accepted the Republican gubernatorial nomination at the state convention here and used his remarks to preempt attacks on his conservative views and lash Terry McAuliffe, his Democratic opponent. Conservative state Sen. Mark Obenshain, whose father was the Virginia GOP's Senate nominee 35 years ago only to die in a plane crash, easily beat a single opponent to win the attorney general race here. IRS Scandal - #4493 - IRS Accused of Stealing 60 Million Medical Records that Could Include Every California State Judge and Hollywood Execs - The Blaze (2) IRS Official in Charge During Tea Party Targeting Now Runs Health Care Office - ABC News (3) Peggy Noonan: This is No Ordinary Scandal - Wall Street Journal (4) National Organization for Marriage to Sue IRS for Leaks - Breitbart (5) IRS to Pro-life Group: Send Letter pledging Not to Protest Planned Parenthood to Get Your Tax Exemption - Hot Air
IRS Accused of Stealing 60 Million Medical Records that could Include Every California State Judge and Hollywood Execs - The Blaze - Yesterday, the founder of one of the conservative groups targeted by the IRS brought up his concerns regarding if the agency could be trusted to handle health care information under Obamacare if it is known already to disclose information that it wasn’t legally allowed. At the same time, the IRS is already being presented with a case from a company that claims it stole more than 60 million medical records of more than 10 million Americans.
The complaint filed by John Doe Company against 15 John Doe IRS agents (this is how the plaintiff and defendants are identified) states that these records could include those of every California state judge, state court employees, members of the Screen Actor’s Guild and the Directors Guild, and “prominent citizens in the world of entertainment, business and government, from all walks of life.”
Court House News reported that the records were obtained while the IRS was investigating a tax matter with a warrant for a former employee of the company. Read more.......
(2) IRS Official in Charge During Tea Party Targeting Now Runs Health Care Office - ABC News - The Internal Revenue Service official in charge of the tax-exempt organizations at the time when the unit targeted tea party groups now runs the IRS office responsible for the health care legislation. Sarah Hall Ingram served as commissioner of the office responsible for tax-exempt organizations between 2009 and 2012. But Ingram has since left that part of the IRS and is now the director of the IRS’ Affordable Care Act office, the IRS confirmed to ABC News today. Her successor, Joseph Grant, is taking the fall for misdeeds at the scandal-plagued unit between 2010 and 2012. During at least part of that time, Grant served as deputy commissioner of the tax-exempt unit. Grant announced today that he would retire June 3, despite being appointed as commissioner of the tax-exempt office May 8, a week ago.

The reputation of the Obama White House has, among conservatives, gone from sketchy to sinister, and, among liberals, from unsatisfying to dangerous. No one likes what they're seeing. The Justice Department assault on the Associated Press and the ugly politicization of the Internal Revenue Service have left the administration's credibility deeply, probably irretrievably damaged. They don't look jerky now, they look dirty. The patina of high-mindedness the president enjoyed is gone. Something big has shifted. The standing of the administration has changed. As always it comes down to trust. Do you trust the president's answers when he's pressed on an uncomfortable story? Do you trust his people to be sober and fair-minded as they go about their work? Do you trust the IRS and the Justice Department? You do not. Read more........
(4) National Organization for Marriage to Sue IRS for Leaks - Breitbart - The National Organization for Marriage, a conservative organization whose confidential records were leaked by the IRS to its left-wing critics, announced on Tuesday it will sue the tax agency for damages. NOM’s 2008 tax return was, according to a press release the group sent out on Tuesday, taken by the IRS and subsequently leaked to its primary political opponent the Human Rights Campaign. “Not only has the IRS retaliated against conservative, small-government and tea party groups as they apply for recognition of tax exemption AND lied about it, but it has criminally released our confidential tax return including the identity of dozens of major donors to a political enemy,” NOM president Brian Brown said in the statement. (5) IRS to Pro-Life Group: Send Letter Pledging not to Protest Planned Parenthood to get your Tax Exemption - Hot Air - The Inspector General of the Treasury reported this week that the IRS began applying extra scrutiny and conducting harassment of Obama administration opponents as early as March 2010.
